September 2018 Newsletter

Greetings all,

September has arrived. It is hard to believe that we are that far into the calendar year…where has the time gone?? Registration is just around the corner, in fact Wednesday, September 12th is the date of this years’ registration. The following week is the Lindsay Fair (September 19th to 23rd) and then we are planning to start the ice plant up on September 24th so that Mark can start cooling down the floor and ice shed in preparation of flooding in the days that follow. Before you know it Practice Week (October 9th to 12th) will be upon us and then the first week of league curling (October 15th). A lot has to be done before that but it is just a gentle reminder that a new curling season will be here before we know it. Let’s get started with this month’s newsletter. Accessibility Update:

Just a note to bring you up to date with regard to the ongoing accessibility project. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and Savaria (Lift Company) were in last week and performed their safety inspection. By all accounts the lift received it’s stamp of approval and we will be able to finally operate the lift. It has been a long process but we finally have access to both the upper lounge and accessible washrooms on the second floor. We will still have to wait another year before we can completely finish the project and gain access to the playing surface. There will be additional funding required and we hope to be able to fully complete the project in the very near future.

I would like to thank the initial project committee for helping to get this plan into motion. Back in early 2015 LCC members on the committee were Emma Ireland, Lynn Joyce, Terry Lenhardt, Kristine Mitchell, Sharron Robertson and myself. Matt Kuiken, also was on the initial committee, who at the time was not a LCC member but an interested party and potential new member. Once we received the go ahead from the membership at the 2015 Annual General Meeting the next item on the agenda was applying for funding. We researched all three levels of government (Federal, Provincial and Municipal) to see if funding was avaliable for a project such as ours. We learned of various funding opportunities and the ball was set in motion.

I would like to thank Jim Scott who assisted in filling out the applications forms. There is a lot of work involved with these applications and Jim spent a lot of his personal time in the office assisting me with the application process. Thank you Jim!

With the Provincial Trillium application we had to provide audited books for the, at that time, present 2015 curling season and the also the previous 2014 curling season. Another two LCC members spent many hours preparing the financials to be audited and we must “Thank” Emma Ireland and Katie McLaughlin for the time and expertise. They spent many hours at the club that summer of 2015 mulling over the financials of the previous two years and doing much of the work themselves. Thank You Ladies for everything!!!

We were successful in attaining funding for the project through the Enabling Accessibility Fund of the Community Accessibility Funding Stream and two anonymous donations. We were finally able to begin the project. A lot has been accomplished since the early stages of this project and now we are nearing the completion of two out of three phases. Thank you again to all who had a hand in working towards the club becoming fully accessible.

Registration Night:

Registration will take place at the club on Wednesday, September 12th from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. We will be having a BBQ as usual, so come on down and enjoy a burger, register and catch up with members you may not have seen since curling ended back in March. Click here for the new registration form with the 2018/19 rates. Please feel free to print a copy of the form and drop off your completed form and payment to the club office or on registration night. Again this year, is an introductory rate for new members of $200.00 for an unlimited membership. What a deal!!!! Curl as often as you like for only $200.00!!! So talk to co-workers, neighbours, friends and relatives and bring them down to the club and get them signed up in one or more of the various leagues we offer.

On Wednesday, October 24th will be our first ladies bonspiel of the year. We would like to thank Jeanette Finney and Ethel Windrem of Ethel & Jeanette's Hairstyling for sponsoring this event again. There will be a signup sheet for this bonspiel at Registration Night. Golf and Steak Day:

The signups for golf are slowly coming in, however, I would like to let Brad Parsons of Deer Run know our final number by Friday, September 7th. If you intend on participating in this event please print out the registration form (click the link for the form) and drop it and your payment off at the club this week. You could also phone the club and let me know that you are planning to come to the golf day and I will fill out a form for you and collect payment on Sunday, September 30th at the course. If you would like to reserve a cart please call Brad and he will book one for you.

Curling Equipment:

Jim Allen, a member of our club, will be again offering Goldline Equipment to the members. He will have some equipment available at the club during Practice Week (October 9th - 12th) for members to purchase. He will provide this service to our members throughout the year. Jim will be more than happy to take orders if he does not have the equipment you want from Goldline here that week. There will be brochures available for you to look through as well. Lindsay Fair Gates:

Cathy Terry has had several meetings with the Fair personnel and they have informed us that there are going to be some changes this year and Cathy wanted me to remind everyone of the information/training session at the club on Monday, September 17th at 7:00 pm. If you are able to help us out during the week of the Fair (September 19th to 23rd) you may want to jot this time and date down.
