February 2017 Newsletter

Hello everyone,

We are well past the halfway mark of the curling season. In fact, we have just 9 more weeks of curling and another season will have ended. Where has the year gone? From here on in, the club is extremely busy with the Senior Men and Women Provincials, rentals, bonspiels, both "in club" as well as "open to out of town" teams, regular league play, playoffs and end of year banquets. Before you know it, the season will be over for another year.

Coming up in February we have the (Jack Debois) Senior Men's Invitational and, of course, the two day Frost Whetter Oaklin Ladies Spiel, which by the way, is celebrating it's 40th year. Also, the City of Kawartha Lake have their "Fun Spiel" and the Humane Society has their fundraising bonspiel.. On Friday, February 10th, we will be having our third steak night of the year, so do not forget to sign up for this popular fundraising event. Our Board members will be assisting that night with the running of the event, however, there is also a sign up sheet being passed around the various leagues for additional helpers. If you are available to help out for a couple of hours, please sign up.

The biggest event in February is the OCA Senior Provincials which runs from Wednesday, February 15th to Sunday, February 19th. The committee has been working tirelessly to make sure that this Provincial will be one to remember for both the competitors, spectators, LCC members and also the Town of Lindsay. We must thank the many, many LCC members who have volunteered to assist during the week. Members have volunteered to be on the hospitality committee, timers, participants in the opening ceremonies, bartenders/servers, team shuttle drivers, members giving up their lockers and the coordination of locker assignments for the participating teams, the pancake breakfast, preparation of flyers and daily newsletters, the creating of the program, ice and house preparation, fundraising such as silent auctions and 50/50 Draws, and by far, the most demanding, the organization of the kitchen and preparation of the meals. It takes a lot of volunteers to put on an OCA event such as the Provincials and the members of the Lindsay Curling Club have certainly "stepped up". Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!! Be sure to drop by the club as the fields for both the women and men are certainly strong and we all should be treated to some great competitive curling.

Pancake Breakfast:

The Tuesday Evening Women's League is running a Pancake Breakfast in conjunction with the Fran Todd Senior Men and Women Provincial Curling Championship. The breakfast will take place on Sunday, February 19th from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. The cost is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 5 - 10 years of age, a family deal (two adults and 2 children) of $20.00 and children under five years of age eat free. Plan to come out and enjoy a pancake breakfast and take in the semi's and finals of the Senior Championship!!!

Steak Night:

As mentioned above Friday, February 10th is our next steak night. Members are reminded to sign up early so that they do not miss out on this function. Even though this steak night is traditionally run by your Board Members, we would really appreciate help running this event. The shifts are approximately two hours and we need volunteers to assist with the duties outlined on the circulating sheet. Our club is predominately run by member volunteers and we need your help, as members, to assist with this important fundraising event.

Heart and Soul Bonspiel: Report submitted by Janet Guillard

Heart N’ Soul Bonspiel>
January 11, 2017
There was a good deal of fun and competition at the Lindsay Curling Club on January 11, 2017 at the Lindsay Ladies Bonspiel, hosted once again by Kim Thornbury of the HNS Giftware Store.
The Bonspiel was kicked off with baked goodies and coffee served at 9:30. Thanks to the guys serving, to the ladies contributing the morning treats and those setting the tables for lunch. Chairperson Jan Guillard welcomed our sponsor, the team members, and introduced Arol Fairbairn, our Draw Master.
Diane’s Country Cooking served a delicious lunch. Jan welcomed Kim, thanked Arol, Bob, our bartender, Mark our ice maker and Dave for all his able assistance leading up to and during the bonspiel!
Carol Douglas and committee prepared delicious snacks for everyone as they relaxed following their games. Eleanor Baldry organized and sold Share the Wealth tickets and did the draw for Hogged Rocks and Double knockout.
Finally the highlight of the day, the prizes for the winning teams!
First: Mary Auld, Judy MacLean, Brenda Lapierre and Connie Quibell
Second: Shirley Toombs, Maria Bennett, Faye Clarke and Donna Paull
Third: Finni Verbik (pm) Marilyn O’Reilly (am), Doris Chidley, Mary Keenan and Joyce Foote
Fourth: Noreen Moore, Heather Sisson, Jean Kyle and Linda Matson
The chairperson ended the day by thanking Kim, everyone who contributed to the success of the day and to the Committee, Mary Auld, Nancy Graham, Eleanor Baldry and Bonnie Steele.

I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in making this day so terrific!! The ladies appeared to have a great day and the committee worked very hard to make this event a success. Thank you ladies!!!!

Other Bonspiels:

The DeBois Senior Men's Invitational and the 40th Frost Whetter Oaklin Ladies two day spiel have both been filled with 24 teams each and we certainly look forward to both of them. Each of the committees have been very busy preparing for their respective spiels and we appreciate their efforts.

Charity Bonspiels:

Humane Society Bonspiel is being held on Saturday, February 25th. For more information regarding this spiel contact Isaac Breadner (705-341-2426)

United Way Bonspiel has been slated for the 11th of March. Contact Audrey Quibell (705-324-6717) for more information.

Lindsay Curling Club "Share The Wealth”:

Last month marked our third club wide "Share the Wealth" draw. Unfortunately, we had several league cancellations during the week of the draw due to inclement weather and participation was low. However, we still held the draw and the two winners were Julie O'Neill and Mark Fevang. We have decided not to have a "Share the Wealth Draw" this month due to the Senior Provincials but look for the final draw of the year during the week of March 13th.

OCA Events:

We have had many teams competing in various OCA events the last month and we have some very exciting news to share with you.

At the Oshawa Curling Club the OCA Intermediate Men's Open Qualifier was held and two teams advanced to the next level. The team of Shannon Beddows, John Bolton, Terry Jenkins and Dave Farr and the team of Dave Nigh, Jim Scott, Tim Raven (Mike Goodhand) and Dave Geelen were successful in moving on to the Provincial Qualifier being played at the Sutton Curling Club on February 11 and 12th. Congratulations to both teams and good luck at the next level.

Tim Raven, Tyler Jones, John Ireland and Shawn Amyotte have advanced to the OCA Colts Provincial Qualifier at the Thornhill Golf & Country Club on February 17 - 19. Play Well and Good Curling!!!

Dave Farr, a LCC member, who played with the team of Gary Grant, Bill Harrison and Randy Grant in the Provincial Qualifier for the Senior Men at the Bradford Curling Club. They were able to come out of the "A" side and will be playing here in Lindsay from February 15th - 19th in the Senior Men's Provincial. Good Luck Dave and Team Grant!!!

Last, but certainly not least, on January 14-15, Angie Melaney and her team of Kristine Mitchell, Chrystal Leavens and Julie Schley played in the Best Western Women's Challenge Provincial Championships. After all the dust had settled, the ladies won all of their games and were crowned Provincial Champions!!!! Way to go ladies, great job!! Another OCA banner for the Lindsay Curling Club!! We are very proud of all of you and what you have accomplished. Wow!! What a year!!!

Top 10 Curling Excuses:

  1. Thought we were the red stones.
  2. Only had one bad end.
  3. Good sweepers would have got it there.
  4. Lost my balance with these new shoes.
  5. Thought you wanted the out-turn.
  6. Game on the sheet next to us was getting good.
  7. Thought the call was for a take-out, not a draw.
  8. That shot was Plan B, or C, or D, or…
  9. There wasn't enough ice.
  10. The first good shots were at the bar.

That's all for now, see you at the Provincials!!!
